A Basic By-The-Bed Emergency Kit

Freeze Dried Food Storage: School Backpack

Everyday you see them. Throngs of children going to school with their backpacks on their backs. Seems to me that you can use a school backpack for more than just books. Why not throw a few necessary items in there and put it next to your child’s bed?

  • ID
  • emergency contact information
  • some money
  • shoes
  • socks
  • dust mask
  • whistle
  • three light-sticks
  • flashlight
  • portable radio
  • GPS device
  • two bottles of water
  • small amount of food (maybe a freeze dried meal that could be made with cold water)
  • eyeglasses (if necessary)
  • throw-away cell phone (this is a maybe, service will probably be out in a disaster)

This list is just a guide. Feel free to adjust it any way you choose.

You may be thinking, why not just give each of the kids a 72-hour kit? That’s fine, IF they can carry it. I have some school-backpack-type 72-hour kits and they are heavy. So, a small child may not be able to carry that kind of weight.

The idea is too just have something for each of your children. And yourselves.

Nitrogen-Pack Your Own Food? You Must Be Joking – Part 1

No, I’m not joking. I’ve done it many times.

You need a few things to do this. Go to your local welding supply house and tell him you want to rent a small bottle of nitrogen. He’ll want to know what you are using it for, so just tell him you want to pack some food.

You need to buy a regulator gauge, some hose, and some copper tubing.

I will take some pictures of the equipment and do a followup post in the next couple days. Stay tuned.

Don’t Shove People, There’s Enough H1N1 Vaccine for Everyone

H1N1 Vaccine Vials and Syringes

U.S. Health Secretary Kathleen Sebelius told lawmakers on Tuesday that U.S. health officials have approved vaccines from four drugmakers to help prevent the H1N1 swine flu, ensuring there will be enough to inoculate Americans who want the protection.

“There will be vaccines for everyone,” Sebelius said at a hearing of the U.S. House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Committee.

So, roll up your sleeves, America. There is enough for everyone. You can even have my shot. I’ve decided to not get one.

Forbes Reports U.S. Dollar Is Collapsing But U.N. Has A Solution

U.S. Dollar Index 2000 - Present

Forbes magazine is reporting that the U.S. dollar is collapsing. Quoting from the article:

“The U.S. Dollar has reached its lowest point against the Euro this year due to a myriad of forces including rising global stocks and commodities prices, low interest rates, and investors diversifying out of Treasury debt and into other assets including U.S. stocks.”

“The dollar’s fall follows a United Nations report released Monday calling for a reduced role of the dollar as the world’s primary reserve currency. This is not the first time the U.N. has called for this, but it’s the most recent.”

“What the U.N. may be trying to do is eliminate global dependence on the dollar. However, more details would be needed on the mechanism for adjustment to judge how it would affect the global currency markets.”

Okay, the U.S. Dollar is collapsing. No surprise. You can not use deficit spending to fix deficit spending. The U.N.’s solution is to encourage other countries to drop the U.S. Dollar as their reserve currency.

Bloomberg News has reported that the current commitment to the Bank/Business Bailout is around $23.7 Trillion. The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the U.S. last year was around $13 Trillion. Tell me how a country can commit almost twice its GDP in a year’s time and still survive? It can’t. The U.S. Dollar is history. Everyone outside the U.S. realizes that. It’s the U.S. citizens who don’t.

I think the U.S. Dollar will collapse and there will be some kind of global currency that will be offered as the solution. Something that will be lauded as the fix for everything. However, all this money has gone out for the Bailout and nothing has changed. Banks are still hoarding money because the Federal Reserve is paying them interest to hold onto it (the Wall Street Journal reported this in Oct. 2008).

All in all, this means there are going to be some pretty rough times ahead. Please do what you can to prepare now while you still have time. Store some freeze dried food, basic stables, canned goods, store water, and get a high quality water filter as a backup.

Previously-Used Containers are Not Suitable for Water Storage

55 Gallon Water Storage Barrel

Water Storage is an ESSENTIAL part of your emergency preparedness plans. This is one area of your preparedness supplies where you don’t want to cut corners! Your life and the lives of those you love could depend on it.

If you want to store large amounts of water, in 55 gallon drums or the like, I recommend that you NEVER purchase previously-used containers. Even if the containers were previously used for food grade items like juice concentrate, juice, syrup, olives, etc., they can still contain residue from those items.

There is a reason why these containers are “used” only once and then discarded. Once they have been used, these containers can never be fully cleaned, as they have microscopic holes in the plastic, where bacteria and mold can hide. Storing water in them will change the water to taste like what was in there before.

Food companies know that these “used” barrels will always be contaminated with a residual amount of the previously-stored item, and using them over would risk contaminating future products. This is why the used containers are sold so inexpensively.

So, only purchase new, never used containers. It probably won’t be cheap, but it will guarantee your water will taste like water.
