In Dubai, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) government approved a plan to build up three-month stocks of rice, flour and other staples to boost food security following the European travel chaos that disrupted supplies, local daily the National reported.
“In cases of emergencies, states can stop exports to other countries … We can’t put all of our eggs in one basket,” Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed al-Nahyan was quoted as saying.
The shutdown of much of European airspace last week due to a huge cloud of volcanic ash paralysed air travel and disrupted the supply of food and other goods to the UAE and other Middle East countries.
