International Swine Flu Conference 2009 Must Have Been Disturbing

Freeze Dried Food: Swine Flu Virus

The International Swine Flu Conference was held in Washington D.C. on August 19 – 20, 2009. I was not there, but learned about the conference and its agenda by reading a brochure of the event I found on the web. What I read was kind of disturbing.

Like a lot of people in the preparedness arena, I have been following the Swine Flu developments for the past several months. So far, I havent known what to make out of all the predictions from the WHO, the CDC, and the U.S. government. However after reading the brochure, I came away thinking that governments are thinking this is a very serious threat. The topics covered in the conference are a good indication. Let me highlight some from the brochure. Just remember I am only mentioning the selected breakout sessions I found to be alarming.

The conference was broken into Breakout Sessions and here are some of the highlights:

Concurrent Breakout Session #1 – Mass Fatality Management Planning

  • Direct fatality management tactical operations
  • Activate fatality management operations
  • Conduct morgue operations
  • Conduct final disposition

Concurrent Breakout Session #2 – Psychological Issues

  • Public’s distress of exposure and safety
  • Breakdown of public services, utilities
  • Medical supplies shortage
  • Unwillingness to follow government orders

Concurrent Breakout Session #7 – First Responders: Fire Department

  • Effectively undertake mass vaccinations
  • Enforce quarantines

Concurrent Breakout Session #8 – First Responders: Public Works

  • Control traffic, evacuation & mass transportation
  • Ensure the minimal delivery of clean water & sanitation services

Concurrent Breakout Session #10 – Hospital and Emergency Medical Services

  • Anticipate interruptions in food, fuel and essentials supply
    chains & establish stockpiles

You can not read these topics and come away with a good feeling. Obviously, the U.S. government is planning for a large scale pandemic, and is expecting public facilities to break down, and there to be widespread shortages of necessary items.

To highlight again, “Direct mass fatality management operations”, “breakdown of public services, utilities”, “medical supplies shortage”, “unwillingness to follow government orders”, “effectively undertake mass vaccinations”, “enforce quarantines”, “ensure minimal delivery of clean water and sanitation services”, “anticipate interruptions in food, fuel, and essentials suppy chain and establish stockpiles”.

After reading this, I hope you are realizing that you need to take stock of your situation. If you haven’t done it already, you should store some food, water, fuel, and other necessities. This Swine Flu may not turn into a pandemic, but they are planning for it, and planning for it on a large scale.

This should tell you something.

Since the conference just happened, I can not find any reports on how it went, but if I find something in the future, I’ll post it here.
